Coal feeders meter raw coal into pulverizer mills, and each feeder must be isolatable so the mill can be taken out of service for maintenance without emptying the coal bunker. A coal feeder slide gate valve closes the chute between the bunker and the feeder, stopping the coal flow completely and providing a positive barrier for safe access. The valve operates with a flat sliding blade that cuts through the coal column.
Service Conditions at the Feeder Inlet
The valve sits at the bottom of the bunker or in the feeder inlet chute, where it is exposed to the full weight of the coal column above it. The coal presses against the blade with considerable force, and the blade must cut through this material while moving. Coal moisture varies with weather and storage conditions, and wet coal packs and bridges, which increases the force required to close the blade.
These conditions demand a rugged design with generous clearances, hardened blade edges, and a strong actuation system that can develop the force needed to close through the coal column.
Design Features of the Slide Gate Valve
The valve body forms a short section of the chute with a slot through which the flat blade slides. In the open position the blade is withdrawn completely from the flow path, leaving a full opening with no obstruction. In the closed position the blade covers the entire chute opening and the blade edge seats against a sealing surface on the downstream side. The blade is guided on both sides to keep it square to the chute during travel.
The blade edge is hardened to resist the abrasion of cutting through coal, and the sealing arrangement prevents coal fines from leaking past the closed blade. The body includes a purge or drain connection where the pocket around the blade can be cleaned when the valve is open or closed. Removable covers give access to the blade guides and sealing surfaces for maintenance without dismantling the chute.
Actuation and Control Options
Manual operation with a handwheel or lever suits valves that are used only during outages, where speed of operation is not critical. For automated operation, pneumatic or electric actuators position the blade from the control room and provide position feedback to the plant control system. The actuator is sized with margin for the worst-case closing force, which occurs when the coal column is at its highest level and the coal is wet and packed.
Limit switches confirm the fully open and fully closed positions, and the control system uses these signals to interlock the feeder operation. The valve can be arranged to fail closed or fail in the last position on loss of actuation power, depending on the plant preference. A manufacturer that builds both the valve and its actuation package delivers a matched assembly that is tested as a unit before shipment.
Selection Criteria and Maintenance
Selection starts with the chute size and the required opening, then considers the coal characteristics, the operating frequency, and the space available for the actuator. The valve must provide a clear opening equal to the chute bore so that coal flow is not restricted when the valve is open. The pressure rating is determined by the coal column height and any additional sealing requirements of the bunker system.
Maintenance focuses on the blade edge, the sealing surfaces, and the actuation components. Worn blade edges and seals are replaced during scheduled outages, and the blade guides are checked for wear that could allow the blade to drift out of square. Keeping spare blades and seals in stores minimizes downtime when replacement is needed. Working with an experienced factory that supplies coal handling valves ensures the design is proven in this demanding service.
